Myers Grade School is historically known as “The Free School”, Cannelton, Indiana. The school opened in 1869. Now part of Cannelton City Schools, Myers Grade School is thought to be the oldest public school building in continuous operation in Indiana, perhaps in the United States. When the school was built in 1868, considerable planning went into its construction to ensure it remained modern in every respect for years to come.
