From Quiet Woodlands to Scenic Waterways, Outdoor Recreation Here Fits Every Pace and Passion
The Hoosier National Forest, spanning nine counties, is Indiana’s year-round playground for outdoor recreation. With 60,000 acres to explore in Perry County alone, the HNF holds history as well as scenic views, diverse habitats and wildlife, and unique geology making it a premier Southern Indiana destination.
A number of lakes, Ohio River access, numerous campgrounds, hiking/biking/equestrian trails, and historic sites offer a variety of opportunities within the Hoosier. From simple relaxation in nature to active recreation, the national forest offers something for everyone.
The area encompassing the Hoosier was once home to Native American villages, trader settlements, and European-American settler farmsteads. The Forest Service began purchasing and restoring land in the 1930’s. In the early years, pines were planted to control erosion and restore the soil that was degraded by overuse. Today, foresters continue to provide a diversity of habitats to attract songbirds, deer, mushrooms and wildflowers. Come explore all that nature has to offer.

Winding its way through six states, the 981 mile Ohio River connects with the mighty Mississippi. Flowing west, the Ohio once served as a path for early frontier settlers. During the Civil War era, the River stood as a boundary between North and South.
Today in Perry County, the 45 miles of Ohio River are known for outdoor recreational activities such as watersports, fishing, and calm scenic beauty.
The scenic driving route hugs the state’s southern border across 13 counties. Highlights include picturesque vistas and quaint communities that tell the story of the river and history of the area.

Perry County and the Ohio River offer several locations for hunting throughout the year including free access to public land in the Hoosier National Forest. Hunters will find ample populations of whitetail deer, raccoons, squirrels, rabbit, ducks, and turkey to name a few.
