Whether you’re looking for a peaceful picnic spot, a family-friendly outdoor adventure, or a unique place to watch river traffic, Eagles Bluff Park is a must-visit attraction in Perry County.

A View Like No Other

Originally known simply as “The Overlook,” Eagles Bluff Park was created during the construction of the Cannelton Locks & Dam. Today, visitors can enjoy an observation area situated approximately 200 feet above the Ohio River, providing sweeping views of the river valley, surrounding hills, and the impressive lock and dam system below.

From the overlook, it’s not uncommon to watch massive towboats and barges navigate through the locks while bald eagles, hawks, and other wildlife soar overhead.

Explore Three Scenic Walking Trails

Nature lovers will appreciate the park’s three walking trails, which wind through the park’s wooded landscape and offer opportunities to experience southern Indiana’s natural beauty up close.

The trails vary in length and terrain, making them suitable for casual walkers, families, and hikers looking for a relaxing outdoor experience. Along the way, visitors can enjoy seasonal wildflowers, mature hardwood forests, native wildlife, and occasional glimpses of the Ohio River through the trees.

Whether you’re seeking a short stroll or a longer nature walk, the trails provide a peaceful escape and an opportunity to explore the bluff-top environment.

These amenities make Eagles Bluff Park an ideal destination for a quick stop or a half-day outdoor excursion.

The Cannelton Locks & Dam

One of the park’s most fascinating features is its view of the Cannelton Locks & Dam, a critical component of the Ohio River navigation system.

Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the facility is located approximately three miles upstream from Cannelton and helps maintain navigable water levels along a 114-mile stretch of the Ohio River. The project includes a 1,200-foot main lock, a 600-foot auxiliary lock, and a dam equipped with twelve massive tainter gates that regulate river flow.

Construction of the locks began in 1963, with the locks opening in 1966 and the dam completed in 1974. The project replaced several older lock systems and significantly improved navigation efficiency on one of America’s most important commercial waterways.

Watching towboats and barges pass through the locks from the Eagles Bluff overlook provides a fascinating glimpse into the engineering and commerce that keep the Ohio River moving.

A Hidden Gem Along the Ohio River

Eagles Bluff Park combines natural beauty, local history, outdoor recreation, and unforgettable river views in one destination. Whether you’re hiking the trails, enjoying a picnic under the shelter houses, photographing the Ohio River, or watching barges pass through the Cannelton Locks & Dam, you’ll discover why this bluff-top park remains one of Perry County’s most treasured attractions.
